How to critique your own thumbnails
A structured look at subject, contrast, and readable type—without chasing trends that do not fit your channel.

Why a critique loop helps
It is hard to see a thumbnail you just designed. A short, repeatable critique creates distance without needing a committee or a trend report.
Subject and focal point
One clear subject
Ask whether a stranger can name the subject in under a second. If two faces or objects compete, simplify. Crop tighter or remove secondary elements that only make sense if you already watched the video.
Gesture and expression
If a person appears, check that the expression matches the video’s promise. Neutral or mismatched emotion usually reads as noise at small sizes.
Contrast and type
Contrast at phone size
Shrink the canvas to a phone preview. If edges disappear into the background, increase separation with value or a simple shape behind the subject—not with more effects.
Readable type
Limit title text to a few words. Prefer weight and spacing over outlines stacked on outlines. If the title repeats the video title verbatim and wraps awkwardly, shorten it.
A simple pass order
- Subject clarity
- Contrast at small size
- Type length and legibility
- Fit with your channel’s usual look
Stop when the thumbnail is clear—not when it looks like someone else’s style.
